Is obesity a disease? If that is true does it give away your power?

What is your understanding of a disease, anyway?

According to AACE, https://www.aace.com/disease-and-conditions/nutrition-and-obesity , obesity (and I believe overweight) is a disease and preventable and treatable condition which simply means a person has too much body fat.

But calling it a disease, is like saying you can catch it, become infected and it is out of your control to do anything about it without medical intervention.

The risks of being overweight include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, fatigue, arthritis, anxiety, depression etc.

But let me ask you this:

Do you lie awake at night worrying about…

  • how you’re even going to achieve a normal weight let alone your dream body?
  • how on earth you are going to get back to your old self because too long has passed and it’s all downhill from here?
  • how you look and feel old (those lines have definitely become more obvious) and feel as if you’re past your sell-by date!
  • when is going to be the right time to do something about it?

Are you scared or frustrated thinking about what the future holds for you? Are you dreading putting on weight in the run up to Christmas now it’s getting harder to get out and get to the gym, do a dog walk, or even do everyday activity like getting in and out of your car doing normal life stuff because we all work from home so much more and having the convenience of online this and that, shopping, zoom calls, social calls. Do you even bother with New Year’s resolutions because the disappointment of failure hurts so much?

Those sneaky intrusive thoughts may sound silly, yet so many people, especially highly successful people who have achieved nearly everything they want – have them anyway. Why is that?

Logically we can run our businesses, our homes, our lives and on the outside we seem to have it all. We are lucky living in the developed world. We can have what we want. But this ONE thing is such a drain. We are what we look like. We get judged by other people and we can see those looks. Or even sometimes total lack of acknowledgment. Some of my clients tell me they feel invisible. Their daughters seem so confident, (fit and slim!). They have their whole lives ahead of them. They don’t appear to worry about or have intrusive thoughts or shameful feelings.

I understand all of these emotions because my clients ‘admit’ them to me, when they haven’t even told their best friend/ husband. They feel embarrassed and ashamed. Sometimes, they don’t even want to say what their dream weight is because it might tempt fate and manifest even more disappointment.

If you eat delicious foods that put you in fat burning mode not fat storage mode, and keep on doing this, your cravings will disappear. The shame will melt away – like the fat, and you will be able to buy a whole new wardrobe or fit into size 8s and 10s. It’s not difficult. It’s easy WHEN you have the right information, and follow it through. What is there to lose and wha’t the worst that could happen if you got this?

Excess weight slows your brain

The largest study of its kind run by Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen, discovered all brain regions had reduced blood flow if patients were overweight or obese.

If going demented isn’t enough of a jolt to losing weight, I don’t know what is!

I find that frightening. Halloween style frightening. The study published in an Alzheimers journal is groundbreaking.

Now let’s be clear. This is frightening. This is scary. But do you use these emotions to freeze with fear or to step out of your way and take action to fix the potential life-changing problem?

We have so much potential. We build small and large businesses. We find vaccines for viruses that are playing havoc with our lives and livelihoods. We create electricity (btw I highly recommend the new film The Current War about Thomas Edison).

But we can’t seem to solve the problem of overweight and obesity.

Something has got to change.

We can change and lead by example. We can inspire and encourage to prioritise health and longevity by being a healthy weight.

I have lost weight.

My clients and others have lost weight by changing their approaches to nutrition, (whilst eating delicious food), understanding their appetites, hormones and brains and not going back to their old ways.

Life is short. Don’t you want to be ‘with it’ if you live a long life?

It can be healthier. Let’s talk
