Is your metabolism slow?

Have you ever bought into this idea?
How many people have you heard complain of a slowed down metabolism? If I had a pound or dollar for every client who said this I would be a wealthy woman! Have you ever complained of it yourself?

It’s so frustrating when the pounds creep on and don’t seem to be able to shift once you hit 40. Many companies have latched onto this idea, and tried to provide a solution. Did you know the weight loss supplement market is worth $72 billion?

Most of these supplements focus on the metabolism. Metabolism is all of the chemical processes that go on inside your body that help break down the food we eat to give us energy. As we age, our metabolisms falI. This article gives a bit more information about how the metabolism is prone to slow down. (Please note I do not endorse this product).

One of the most important glands and hormones responsible (amongst other things) for our metabolism is the thyroid. If you didn’t know, the thyroid is the bow-shaped gland in your neck. Problems with this gland can lead to uncontrollable weight gain. Did you know 1/3 of the population is at risk of deficiency particularly in European countries with soil depletion? Hypothyroidism is caused by iodine deficiency, which causes fatigue, muscle weakness and weight gain.

Seaweed contains iodine which is a very important mineral for the thyroid.
Seaweed is an ingredient perhaps most recognised in sushi, but you can also make your own wraps with seaweed, if you are creative in the kitchen!

Another reasons for a slow-down in the metabolism is increased inflammation in the body.

I looked through the ingredient list, of the weight loss supplement in the above article. I wasn’t surprised at all. But if you look at the price, well that’s enough to raise your heart rate! So, if you are willing to try seaweed as a savoury snack you can find it on my recommended products page on my website. (For my US and N. American readers, – Hi! Amazon have plenty of seaweed snacks and Nori is often the sheeted seaweed used for Sushi.)

According to the NHS (UK National Health Service) “People who struggle to lose weight often blame a slow metabolism.” But – they say – “there’s little evidence to support this claim.
Research actually shows that overweight people have faster metabolisms than thinner people. Larger bodies require more energy to carry out basic bodily functions. Putting a “slow metabolism” to one side, something else may be at play here.
Research suggests people tend to eat more than they think they do. When asked to write down everything they’ve consumed in a day, many people tend to report eating far less than they actually do.” In my experience, most of my clients have larger, taller more active husbands and sons who eat double the amount, and it seems unfair and inexplicable.

More often than not, the reason you’re putting on weight is not because of a slow metabolism, it’s because you’re eating and drinking more calories than you’re burning and specifically the types of food which cause fat storage, like simple sugars and carbs which turn to sugar in the blood.

It may be hard to accept, but switching to less energy-dense foods whilst working on balancing your blood sugar levels and staying on top of the total number of calories you eat is key to losing weight and keeping it off for good.

Keeping ahead of your hunger is key to losing weight, and resolving to ditch the ‘diet’ mentality or an ‘all or nothing’ approach. Better yet the ‘switches’ are even more delicious!

I’m doing some research for a brand new digital course and I need to know – Do you have a rebound effect when it comes to losing weight? Do you gain ten pounds and then lose it throughout the year?
