Do you waste food? It’s food waste action week.

Have you heard the latest stats about food waste in this country? It is absolutely shocking to me that 70% of the food that we waste comes from our homes. This food waste article
is a real eye-opener. This week is Food waste action week.

We want to be healthy, and many of us dream of being slim and feeling good about ourselves. Amanda (not her real name) said to me,
“A lot of confidence and happiness is how I feel about myself” and it was always on my mind and I was miserable. I felt there was nothing I could do. I just wasn’t confident in my clothes.” This was doubly difficult because she worked as a physio in the health and wellness industry.

On a practical level, we don’t want to be spending an arm and a leg on food that gets thrown away. And many people worry that implementing a new nutrition plan means eating wierd foods that never get eaten.

One thing we can do to prevent this problem is illustrated in this quote:-
The most significant factor causing food waste…is due to the uncertainty over food expiration dates. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council there is confusion in deciphering ‘best before’, ‘sell-by’, or ‘use-by dates’. This uncertainty leads to consumers to toss food which could actually be safe for consumption because retailers have unclear labels”

There is no need to toss food when you can freeze it! So, make your freezer your friend. I like to cook something up when the oven is already on – to save energy too. For example last night I had some chicken left over from a Sunday roast. I coated it in special (un-fattening) spicy breadcrumbs, and there is a labelled box with cold coated chicken in the fridge now as a snack or for lunch protein.

Another thing you can use to help you organise your life is to use storage jars. I will tell you more about my specific recommendations soon. It has totally transformed my approach to my diet, nutrition and ultimately keeping me slim and helping my clients learn the best ways to organise their time and not overspend or throw away good food.

What is your best way to not waste food? Do you get annoyed with yourself for throwing food away?
