Walking on eggshells? Mental health and a healthy weight.

Mental health seems to be in the news every day. On the radio yesterday one young woman (19) said that her age group has suffered the most during Covid and lockdown.

Social media is often blamed for putting pressure on women and men – my male cousin had anorexia when he was in his late teens – especially younger ones. (Maybe we get resilient as we age).

Every successful person gets knocked back at some stage of their life. I think it feels more commonplace now because a few people hide behind their smartphones in relative anonymity. They would never say what they write to your face!

I had a very irate woman leave me a voicemail. She was positively incandescent with rage about something I had written on type 2 diabetes and how it can be put into remission through diet and lifestyle.

🥼  I understood how angry she was because her doctor and nurse told her it was impossible. This week there is yet another study * that has come out proving it is possible.

I have noticed a lot of kick-back in the news about weight loss because some people deny that being a healthy weight is in fact necessary for good health.

I want to make myself VERY clear here.

🦸🦸‍♀️ I help people who want to lose weight because they understand being overweight is unhealthy. I want to help prevent people from getting cancer or having cancer come back. I want to prevent people from getting heart disease, or high blood pressure so that they can feel so much more confident and achieve many of the goals they had put off for ‘one day’. They finally realise that one day is today, and they are living the dream. It’s absolutely amazing and life-changing! (That’s you as a superhero in an emoji!)

Being slim and fit saved my life according to the consultant who spoke to me when I woke up after being unconscious in intensive care for five days and being told I was really lucky to be alive.

People can choose and are totally free to believe that being overweight is healthy.

However, I know otherwise.

When people get offended or upset it is often because they have unresolved feelings. Change is hard. It’s also really easy to blame anyone else for unsettled emotions. I have been accused of judging people’s looks just because I choose to put on make-up, dress a certain way and colour my hair. I am proud of how I present myself! It is my brand. It is who I am. I accept other people whatever they look like. Just because I choose to present myself in a certain way doesn’t mean anyone else has to copy me, or vice versa. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Social media is being blamed for mental health problems and eating disorders.

📲 🖥 👩🏼‍💻 But what about all the positives that have come out of social media?

💃🏻🕺🏽 I prefer to choose to see the benefits, the time savings, the information, the connection, the possibilities that social media has opened up.

What do you choose to see?

NB. I am not denying the fact that people do have mental health issues, or need to be medically treated for diagnosed conditions. I am a Nutritionist and Life Balance Coach and this is my personal take on this specific subject. I have had considerable personal experience of reactional anxiety and low mood disorders, and I have helped many clients through dark days to become the people they really want to become.
