Why don’t diets work?
Well, today is International No Diet day! (7th May)
This is about focusing on being kind to yourselfย ๐๐
No diet day was created by former anorexic and mental health advocate Mary Evans in 1992.
I get it.
๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ I know how it feels to hate your body, how it feels to be overweight, the self-judgement, the lack, the frustration, and the shame. Eating foods made me feel better but only in the short-term.
๐ I don’t want that for anyone!
๐๐๐ย Now I realise we need to love ourselves from the inside out before we can love ourselves from the outside in and be healthy.
๐๐ผโโ๏ธ It’s how you feel and how you appear.
๐ช So many people diet and end up yo-yo-ing and putting all the weight back on and more within 5 years. Low-calorie diets specifically do not work. In fact, 98% of low- calorie diets do not work according to the Nurses’ Health study.
๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ Weight loss success should be focused on the mental health and psychological impact.
๐ง If the underlying reasons for why you have put on weight are not addressed, it will bounce right back on. (Obviously, you need to have the knowledge about what to eat and what not to eat too).
The trouble is that the word ‘diet’ is defined as negative. But really a diet is what you eat.
๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ It’s your choice!
๐๐ป We need to reframe the conversation around health, being healthy, and eating a healthy diet as a positive step, not as deprivation, negative or limiting.
๐๐ป When you change, adopt a new habit and, get results that’s great. However, if you change for a few months and then revert to your old habits, that’s the yo-yo right there.
๐๐ป So it’s all about finding new ways that work for you. New ways that fit into your life. Enjoyable, fun ways to eat, which make you feel full of energy, enthusiasm, and vitality!
๐ฆธ๐ผโโ๏ธ๐ฆธ๐ผ Don’t you want more of that?
