Willpower and weight loss
In a previous blog post we discussed the ‘mind over matter’ approach to losing weight. However, once a habit has been formed, you don’t have to think twice about a food choice – it becomes automatic.
‘’It takes an average 66 days to form a new habit, according to 2009 research by Phillippa Lally and colleagues from the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre based at UCL Epidemiology and Public Health.’’
There is one simple habit that can result in a weight loss of 10lbs in a mere 12 weeks. A study was carried out at The University of Birmingham. By ‘preloading’ with a large glass of water half an hour before a meal, three times a day, together with some diet and lifestyle tips, participants achieved a remarkable weight loss.
Although in the beginning of a weight loss effort, you may need to rely on willpower, the excitement and challenge provides a level of momentum. We may instinctively know what we need to do, we just can’t seem to do it. Or not for any significant period of time before we give up. We seem to sabotage our best intentions. This is where social or professional support comes in. We say we want to lose weight, and we may have very personal reasons for doing so. A minority of people have incredible self-motivation, and time and discipline to go it alone. However, there is nothing wrong with getting help. In fact, it takes guts.
If you want to learn a new skill, you often learn from an expert. If you want to learn a new language you get a teacher and practice regularly. You might even visit the country or start watching TV in the new language. So, what is the difference if you want to lose weight, and are serious about it?
There is a method to weight loss programmes. Step I is to clarify your vision. It is really important to be absolutely clear in your mind as to why you want to lose weight. Has it always been a desire for you to fit into a size 10 or 12, or fit into a suit from your younger days? Are you concerned about worrying health markers such as diabetes or high cholesterol, or feeling tired all the time? Do you have a string of Christmas parties approaching, and you do not want to look like the largest person in the photos?
A coach helps us celebrate our wins and encourages us after life’s challenges. A professional weight loss coach will not judge you or berate you, they will be your champion and cheerleader. Steak, eggs, cheese, salads, fresh vegetables with butter, seafood, fish, nuts, seeds, chocolate, fruit, waffles and even cookies are all on the menu. The purpose of learning a new way of eating is to enjoy it, and feel the benefits fast.
