This week a news story Scottish chef told how a man lost 5 stone (70 lbs) and got more than he bargained for.
Steve Gilroy caught Covid in March, and it changed his life. I have often heard of people saying cancer changed their life – for the better – and I can say it is true for me. Covid was a wake-up call for this chef, who used to be ashamed of his unsightly skin condition, psoriasis. Did you know psoriasis is an illness, which is caused by excess inflammation in the body and can often be improved by switching to a dairy-free and gluten-free diet? He lost his big belly and got rid of his psoriasis as a beneficial side-effect of losing 5 stone. (70 lbs)
He used to be 20 stone. (280 lbs)
Having found himself with typical Covid symptoms he was put on antibiotics but luckily knew that obesity and being overweight are risk factors.
He said, ‘one day I caught sight of myself in the mirror and thought, ‘what are you doing?, ‘I am going to end up killing myself at this rate’.
Steve found the after-effects of Covid included extreme tiredness very quickly, even after a short walk.
A lot of my clients email me and reach out because they are worried about themselves because of their worsening health. They realise they are getting older and appreciate that life is short. This example was of a man in his late 40s. Many people realise that living a long life is no good if it is in poor health. I even had a young client in her early thirties who had been unable to get pregnant for several years – but within two weeks of working with me fell pregnant.
You see, weight loss just for the sake of fitting into nice clothes will not sustain you. You have to have a very good reason. You also need to have a method that gives you your solution. And you need to measure it for a significant time because behaviours are often subconscious and need embedding.
This man did it with a proven method. His wife joined him and lost 3 stone (42 lbs). Steve wants to lose another stone (14 lbs) and then put on some muscle. You can weigh more but be smaller because muscle gives a toned appearance.
Having support, doing something really big, having a meaningful goal that you follow through forever and maintain for life makes all the difference. Even if you think you know what you should be doing. It’s finding a way to enjoy delicious foods and to eat when you’re hungry – not bored or stressed. Don’t give up, get help, and find a way that works for you.
